True Story – The Man Who Moved A Mountain In India!
Here is a true story of a man from India, who single-handedly moved a mountain! Yes, he literally carved a 360 feet long and 30 feet wide road through a mountain.
About five decades ago, a landless farmer, Dashrath Manjhi from Gehlaur village of Gaya, Bihar, in India decided to take into his own hands the responsibility to ease the difficulties of the people from his village, who were almost cut off from the rest of the world by rocky hills, almost making the place impossible to reach.
Around 1959, his wife, Falguni Devi passed away from illness due to lack of medical care. There was no way of taking her to the nearest medical centre, which was across the 300 feet high hills.
Heartbroken after her death, Manjhi alone resolved to create a pass through the hill so that no other person would have to suffer the same fate that his wife did. He sold his cattle to purchase a hammer, chisel and a rope, and began his laborious journey.
“I started this work out of love for my wife, but continued it for my people. If I did not, no one would.” – Manjhi
Radical change in his behavior made him a laughing stock among the people and ridiculed his ideas. But his patience gave him the courage to overcome extreme pain, frustration, disappointments and personal loss.
“When I started hammering the hill, people called me a lunatic but that steeled my resolve.” – Dashrath Manjhi
Undaunted by their comments, Manjhi hammered away with steady determination for 22 long years. At the end of his rigorous labor, he finally came face to face with his dream: ‘The Other Side Of The Hill!’
He shortened the distance from 70 kilometer to just ONE kilometer! After he achieved his goal, Dashrath Manjhi was popularly known as the ‘Mountain Man’ in and around his village.
Sadly, this amazing man breathed his last on August 18, 2007, at the age of 73, after fighting cancer at New Delhi’s AII India Institute of Medical Sciences and received a state funeral by the Government of Bihar.
Dashrath Manjhi, a man who was mocked and ridiculed for his strong-minded determination leaves behind a legacy of strong will and determination.
Let’s inspire ourselves to do the impossible. Don’t lose heart if people call you mad and crazy for your unique idea/thoughts.
